January focus for learning - The World Around Us

At nursery we celebrate the opportunity to teach the children about world cultures. We can travel the world without needing a suitcase. Starting the new term together, introducing the children to various traditions is a helpful addition to their educational journey! With the growing diversity in classrooms these days, sharing culture is vital to understanding it. Nonetheless, there are many things we can have in common despite the fact that we are from different cultures.

Why should we teach our pupils about world culture?

Well, there are many reasons, here are some of them:

In every class in nursery, we have children from at least three different cultures. They need to know each other and learn about their friends.

Teaching world cultures is a wonderful way to help them appreciate the differences in people and traditions.

It’s a great way to allow children to realise that we are all different and that people from different countries have inherently unique histories, families, way of living, etc.

It’s a great way to allow children to realise that while we are all different (looks, families, cultures, backgrounds) inside we are all the same. We all feel happy and sad and excited.

It teaches our children the value of respect and appreciation of others.

There are plenty of ways to teach your kids about different countries right in the comforts of your home. Using a few resources and lots of creativity, they will find this topic interesting and utterly fun!

give them dual language books to “read”

give them non-fiction books to explore and enjoy

investigate arts and crafts from different cultures

cook them a traditional dish, or even better have them help you cook a traditional dish teach them a new language

celebrate an international holiday
